Master of Human Resources Management

The executive-style MHRM is designed to provide professional HRM specialists with the skills and credentials necessary to become senior-level professionals. Offered on a full-time or part-time basis, the MHRM program was developed to work around a busy schedule.

  • The responsibility for, and commitment to the York University Attendance Management Program, exists at all levels of the organization. Successful attendance management is dependent upon the commitment of all stakeholders. Outlined below are some of the key responsibilities of the various stakeholders who will impact the success of this program.

Explore issues such as organizational change and development, labour relations, strategic compensation, international HR, and the impact of HR policies, practices and programs on employee and organizational performance. In addition to classroom seminars, you will have the option of rounding out your studies with an independent research paper developed under the guidance of one of our world-class professors. The program will help you acquire the competencies, recognition and status that a graduate degree brings, and prepare you to take on a leadership role in this expanding and exciting field.

PhD in Human Resources Management

York's PhD is distinguished by its diverse methodological approach to research and emphasis on pedagogical training. It contributes to the growth of HRM as a unique discipline, while acknowledging its interdisciplinary foundations.

Students completing the York PhD in HRM program will have a distinct advantage over similar graduates from other schools in North America. In addition to knowledge and expertise in quantitative research methods, students will gain exposure and training in alternative methods that critically evaluate the ontological assumptions and epistemological approaches of much of current HRM scholarship. While positivist approaches continue to dominate research activity in HRM, there is an increasingly important role for qualitative research methods, located in an interpretivist paradigm. Faculty associated with the PhD program in HRM have extensive expertise in both positivist and interpretivist research. Furthermore, this expertise covers many bases within interpretivism itself. This breadth and diversity of training is not typically available in most institutions in Canada.

Students will also receive more rigorous training in university teaching and pedagogy compared to what most other programs offer. For years, there has been a growing emphasis on the need to produce high quality teachers as well as high quality researchers and HRM professionals. While almost all Ph.D. programs recognize the value of excellent teaching, few programs actually incorporate pedagogical training into their courses. Given the belief in the value of generating excellence in teaching and research, this program makes pedagogical training a requirement.

York is the first university in Canada to offer both a bachelor and a master’s degree program in this field.

Disasters related to flooding, terrorism, fires, power blackouts and hurricanes continue to remind us of the need for good management - often through effective risk reduction strategies, they can even be prevented. The 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the Ebola epidemic and the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire evacuation demonstrate the pressing need for qualified and trained professionals in the field.

Disaster and Emergency Management (DEM) is the discipline of understanding, dealing with and avoiding risks. In this exciting field you will explore key concepts, methodologies and technologies used by emergency management professionals while honing your analytical and critical skills. You'll also gain a comprehensive understanding of how emergency management intersects with other disciplines such as psychology and sociology. Discover strategies to help save lives and property, reduce damage and speed a community’s recovery from natural and human-induced disasters and emergencies.

You will examine a diverse range of topics including:

  • disaster risk management
  • ethics
  • terrorism

In addition to this, you will learn to apply key concepts, methodologies and technologies used by emergency management professionals to complex real-life challenges.

This program prepares you to synthesize large amounts of complex information and make sound decisions in challenging and often difficult circumstances. As a graduate you will be on the trajectory towards a career in emergency management, public safety or consultancy work for a range of opportunities from positions in federal and provincial governments to large multinational companies and non-governmental organizations like the Red Cross/Red Crescent, World Bank, Oxfam or UNICEF.

  • You have the option of continuing your education within the disaster and emergency field with York's Master of Disaster and Emergency Management degree — the only graduate program of its kind in Ontario and one of only two in Canada.
  • You'll have the opportunity to join professional organizations such as The International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM), a non-profit educational organization dedicated to promoting the goals of saving lives and protecting property during emergencies and disasters.
  • Take advantage of experiential learning opportunities and interact with leading professionals who will provide you with a deeper insight into the field. You will have the option to complete a field experience that will help to foster a greater understanding of the complexities and realities emergency management professionals face.
  • You are also encouraged to take advantage of the regular events held by both the undergraduate and graduate Disaster & Emergency Management Student clubs at York University, and various external disaster management associations.   • Principles of Math 12 or Foundational Math 12 or Pre-calculus 12
  • And two additional Grade 12 Academic subjects
    • To gain admission to this program, your academic average should be in the mid-70s.Maintaining your offer of admission to this program requires a final academic average of 72.

    You are required to provide official evidence of academic achievement in secondary education. This can be demonstrated through:

    • Final grades under the Ontario curriculum (obtained through correspondence, night school or through TVO)
    • Credentials through other curricula, such as results from Advanced Placement (AP) or Advanced-level courses in the General Certificate of Education (GCE). (Students may register to sit for the AP and GCE examinations as private candidates.)

    In the absence of final grades in courses:

    • You must submit the results of standardized tests such as the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) with a minimum combined total of 1170 on the Critical Reading and Math components or a composite American College Testing (ACT) score of 24.
    • Your application will be reviewed by an admissions sub-committee. If admitted, you will not be eligible for entrance scholarships. You will be considered for continuing student scholarships at the end of your first year of study, if you satisfy those criteria.
